Project Update

Long time between updates I know, but with one semester ending, holidays and a new semester beginning; finding time has been a challenge.

The project had been moving along pretty smoothly;
posters were printed and hung,a survey was sent out among the students and received no less than 450 responses...pretty impressive participation
...and then an unexpected hurdle or two.

Seems that the containers I had hoped to use are not the property of Edison, but that of an organization that is collecting cans. Yes I know, we don't have cans in our machines on campus, but that's besides the point. It means that there are no available containers to use here on campus, I need to find a way to provide some.

I've also discovered that there is no recycling pick up here on campus, so the removal of the bottles off campus and into a recycling facility is also at question.

I'm in the process of creating an in depth survey for students to gauge enthusiasm and interest in this project and recycling in general and another aimed at Dept. heads to gauge interest in a proposal of sponsorship of particular hallways on campus; the sponsorship would involve a donation to the purchase of a receptacle for collection as well as the responsibility of removal of collections for the collections in the sponsored hallway.

Please feel free to leave a comment or e-mail me at rbrandewie@edisonohio.edu with suggestions or thoughts

Project Update

The project to recycle the plastic drink bottles on campus is well underway.

Besides getting this blog up and rolling, the posters are nearly complete and will be printed and distributed around campus with in the next week or two.

A survey is all set up and ready to send to students and faculty, just waiting on approval before it can be sent. It will help to establish peoples routines and thoughts on recycling.

The collection bins should be ready by Nov. 7th, Darrel Isaacs, the Director of Facilities and Auxiliary Services, is on vacation next week. He will be pivotal to obtaining the bins and their placement.

Our current number of staff, faculty and students at the Piqua campus is approx. 3500. The amount of drinks in plastic bottles sold in a week on campus is approx. 850, with more sold during volleyball and basketball games.

Getting 100% participation would save approx. 42,500 plastic bottles from ending up in landfills in one year!

I hope you all participate.

Carbon Footprint

Many of you may be asking what is a carbon footprint and do I have one...

Your carbon footprint is the greenhouse gas emissions that you contribute to in going about your daily life — traveling to and from work, running your household, feeding your family — each of the choices you make in your home, your travel, the food you eat, and what you buy and throw away all influence your carbon footprint.

Everyone has a carbon footprint, and this is one case where size does matter.

Think SMALL... the smaller your footprint the smaller your negative impact upon the environment will be.

There are many ways one can reduce their carbon footprint, remember - reduce, reuse and recycle.

Keep checking back for more information

Recycling extremes?

not really, but doing so in an innovative way is certainly what two Princeton University students,Tom Szaky and Jon Beyer have done with their company's flagship product, TerraCycle Plant Food™".

"It is an all-natural, all-organic, 'goof-proof' liquid plant food made from waste (worm poop) and packaged in waste (reused soda bottles)!"

On their products page you can mouse over the image to show what the product is packaged in. You will see the all too familiar shapes of soda bottles, big and small, as well as milk jugs.

This is truly innovative recycling!
